National Minimum Wage Increase….AGAIN!!

As of the 1st April 2019, the NMW (National Minimum Wage) will be increased for all working people over the age of 25.

Rates as of 1st April 2019:

• (£8.21) per hour – 25 years old and over
• (£7.70) per hour – 21-24 years old
• (£6.15) per hour – 18-20 years old
• (£4.35) per hour – 16-17 years old
• (£.3.90) for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over who are in the first year of apprenticeship.

You are entitled to the above rates if you fall under any of the below categories;

• Part-time
• Casual labourers, for example someone hired for one day
• Agency workers
• Workers and homeworkers paid by the number of items they make
• Apprentices
• Trainees, workers on probation
• Disabled workers
• Agricultural workers
• Foreign workers
• Seafarers
• Offshore workers

Not being paid the NMW?

It is against the law for employers to pay employees less than the national minimum wage allocated to the correct age bracket. If an employer doesn’t pay the correct rate, a worker should talk to their employer and try to resolve the issue informally first. If this doesn’t work a worker may make a formal grievance to their employer.

NMW Exemptions:
There are a number of people who are not entitled to the NMW.
• Self-employed workers
• Volunteers or voluntary workers.
• Company directors.
• Family members, or people who live in the family home of the employer who undertake household tasks.
